Ah, the constant question. How do I handle social media in the current age?
Obviously, I’m choosing to blog right now, which is a throwback for me to the time before there were dozens of different platforms available to everyone with an internet connection. Back in the day when modems made that grinding boo-dee-beeeeeeep sound, I was a fairly active blogger in the romance writing community because it was pretty much the only platform available for reaching readers, as well as being part of the writing community. There were forums, as well, but everyone blogged on their own website or on LiveJournal.
Then came MySpace and folks moved their blogs there. When that disappeared almost overnight, Facebook moved in and blogging took a big dive. A few folks have persisted, but by and large, writing on your own site went away.
Twitter/X, BlueSky, Mastodon, Tumblr, Discord, YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, and dozens of others I’ve never even heard of have attracted their users and made the online world exciting and vibrant and vicious and intrusive, each in their own ways.
Now that I’m developing a business, I need to address the question of how to connect with people who like what I do. I have a FB page, but I’m not very active there. This blog cross-posts to the page, but the idea of having to come up with extra, separate content just for FB feels like busy work.
And how do ADHD folks handle busy work? We don’t.
But I’m seriously contemplating a YouTube channel. For one, it’s my go-to for scrolling because I never know what I’m going to learn from someone there. For another, it feels a lot like blogging. I enjoy listening to people ramble about their topic of interest and just having fun with it.
I bought a ring light and one of those fluffy little microphones, so one of these days I’m going to just take the leap and hit “record” on something. We’ll see. I’ll let you know how it goes.
